SEO reporting: how to measure SEO success and ROI

Good SEO reporting connects search visibility to business results. Rankings matter, but the real question is: is organic search bringing more of the right visitors, enquiries and sales?

How to calculate SEO ROI

SEO ROI = (revenue from organic search − cost of SEO) ÷ cost of SEO × 100.

Example: if SEO costs R8,500 a month and brings 10 extra leads, 3 of which become customers worth R12,000 each, monthly revenue is R36,000 and ROI is (36,000 − 8,500) ÷ 8,500 ≈ 324%. Because SEO results build over time, measure ROI over 6 to 12 months. Try our SEO ROI calculator.

What a monthly SEO report should include

  1. Organic leads and conversions compared with last month and last year
  2. Clicks, impressions and CTR trends
  3. Ranking movement for priority keywords
  4. Work completed and its purpose
  5. Issues found and next month's plan

Questions answered

How do you measure SEO success?

Track impressions, clicks, rankings and, most importantly, organic leads and revenue over time, comparing month-on-month and year-on-year.

What are impressions in SEO?

An impression is counted each time your page appears in a user's search results, whether or not they click.

What is CTR in SEO?

CTR (click-through rate) is the percentage of people who click your result after seeing it: clicks divided by impressions.

What is a good CTR for SEO?

It varies by position and search type. Position one often earns well above 20%, while page-two results get very few clicks. Compare your CTR with pages at similar positions.

What KPIs should I track for SEO?

Organic conversions, organic sessions, clicks, impressions, CTR, keyword rankings, indexed pages and referring domains.

How do you calculate ROI for SEO?

Subtract the cost of SEO from the revenue it generated, divide by the cost and multiply by 100 for a percentage.

What is average position in Google Search Console?

The average ranking of your site for a query or page across all the searches where it appeared.

How do I track keyword rankings?

Use Google Search Console for free average positions, or a rank tracker (Semrush, Ahrefs, SE Ranking) for daily tracking by location and device.

What are SEO metrics?

SEO metrics are measurements of search performance, such as rankings, traffic, CTR, backlinks, Core Web Vitals and organic conversions.

Why did my SEO traffic drop?

Common causes are Google core updates, technical errors (noindex, redirects), lost backlinks, seasonal demand, stronger competitors or AI features answering the query directly. Compare Search Console data before and after the drop.
