15 steps to improve your SEO
- Connect Google Search Console. It shows which searches you appear for, which pages are indexed and what errors Google finds. It's free.
- Research your keywords. Find what customers actually type, and pick one main keyword per page (keyword research guide).
- Match search intent. If Google shows lists for a keyword, write a list; if it shows service pages, build a service page.
- Write a better title tag. Put the main keyword near the start and keep it under about 60 characters.
- Write a meta description that earns the click. About 150 to 160 characters with a clear benefit. Test it in our SERP snippet preview.
- Use one clear H1 and logical subheadings.
- Make the content genuinely helpful. Answer the question fully, add real examples, prices, photos and experience. Thin pages rarely rank.
- Add internal links from related pages using descriptive anchor text.
- Speed up the site. Compress images, use good hosting and keep plugins lean. Check with Google PageSpeed Insights.
- Make it mobile-friendly. Google ranks the mobile version of your site.
- Use HTTPS and fix broken links and redirect chains.
- Add structured data (schema) for your business, FAQs, products or reviews. Try our schema generator.
- Optimise your Google Business Profile and collect reviews if you serve local customers (local SEO).
- Earn backlinks from relevant South African sites: suppliers, associations, local media, partners (link building).
- Update and expand content regularly and track results monthly.
How to rank on the first page of Google
Look at the pages already on page one for your keyword. To take their place, your page needs to be more complete, more useful and more trusted. Compare what they cover, what questions they answer, how fast they load and how many sites link to them. Close those gaps, starting with the easiest keywords.
Target long-tail keywords first ("seo services for dentists in Durban" rather than "seo"). They have less competition, convert better and build authority for harder terms later.
How to get your website on Google at all
- Make sure the site isn't blocked: no
noindextag and robots.txt doesn't disallow pages. - Create an XML sitemap and submit it in Google Search Console.
- Use the URL Inspection tool in Search Console and click "Request indexing" for key pages.
- Get at least a few links from other sites (directories, partners, social profiles) so Google discovers you.
Things that hurt rankings
- Duplicate or copied content, including the same text on many location pages
- Keyword stuffing and hidden text
- Buying links or joining link schemes
- Slow, broken or pop-up-heavy mobile pages
- Changing URLs without 301 redirects
- Publishing lots of low-quality AI content without editing or expertise
